copy locked file
What is going to happen if you'll attempt to copy a file opened by other program using? Sometimes you will get an error message, since access to the file might be locked if it is opened in exclusive mode by other application. But how you can copy or backup locked file anyway?
Microsoft has developed a technology, named as Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS). Due to this technology, applications can access files which can be opened or locked by other programs.
VSS makes a consistent shadow copy of a volume at a given point in time. This shadow copy is a read-only copy (snapshot) of the volume which you can use by the backup application during the backup job. There's no need to quit any programs to make a shadow copy. Snapshot creation is usually a quick procedure, it will take just only couple of seconds. The volume snapshot is not changed even if any files on that drive are modified during backing up, so other applications can continue work together with files on the volume, uninterrupted by the backup. As soon as the backup is completed, the shadow copy can be deleted.
SyncBack4all File Sync Backup software uses the Volume Shadow Copy service. It allows you to back up open files (local) from NTFS partitions in Windows Vista, XP, 2003, 2008 Server and Windows 7. For example, you can backup Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express emails and settings without closing them.
